November Events Report

4th Annual "Harvey Brush Memorial"
2023 Shuffleboard Tournament

Our 4th Annual Harvey Brush Memorial Shuffleboard Tournament was held at the Sauble Beach Community Centre on Monday, November27th. We had a very enthusiastic group of both experienced and novice shuffleboard players participate in this event including 16 Men's Club members and 6 Sandpipers with great fun had by all throughout the tournament.

Prior to the start of play, Cecil Groves provided a brief history of some of Harvey Brush's accomplishments. Harvey was one of the founding members of the McLaren Pipe and Drum Band in Wiarton and was fixture as a piper at the Hepworth Cenotaph Remembrance Day Ceremonies. Harvey was a WW II veteran who at 15 joined the Lorne Scots Regiment in Brampton as a reservist. He enlisted at 16 and went overseas at 17. He was part of the First Division's amphibious landing on the island of Sicily's Pachino Beach on July 3, 1943.

The games began at 9:00 a.m. sharp with a round robin tournament where each team played 4 games to compete for prizes and bragging rights. At our half time break lots of good conversation along with coffee, muffins and donuts were enjoyed by all in attendance.

The winner of this year’s tournament was the team of Bob Rusk and Alf Roth who went undefeated with 4 wins on the day scoring a total of 318 points. Second place went to the team of Don Dougall and Don Zimmer also with 4 wins and third place went to Cecil Groves playing solo.

Our thanks go out once again to the organizers, Cecil and Joan Groves for the extra effort put in to make this annual event such a great success.

Special thanks go to Shirley Hales, Sandpiper President for offering the Sauble Beach Community Centre morning time slot to the Men's Club so that we could bring this event back to our list of activities. We hope to see everyone back next year.
