Our After-Dinner Speaker:

Fred Wallace (retired after 40 years on the Radio - Owen Sound)

A Midland native, Wallace first worked for his hometown station at 1230 CKMP after graduating from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute. He moved to the Scenic City in 1984 to work as a disc jockey at CFOS before taking over the sports director role in 1988.

He’s been the voice of the Owen Sound Platers and Attack since the franchise moved to the city from Guelph in 1989.

The voice of sports for a generation in Owen Sound, Wallace has also broadcast games for several city lacrosse teams while detailing scores and summaries for all kinds of regional competitions and hosting countless community events.

In 2014, Wallace was a surprise inductee into the city’s sports hall of fame, honoured for his decades of support for local sports in both Grey and Bruce counties.

In 2017, Fred Wallace was one of four residents who received the Canada 150 Molson Canadian Community Leader Award for the positive impact they’ve had on the community. Nominated for the award by the city’s Canada 150/Owen Sound 160 Celebration committee, the city lauded Wallace for drumming up more public support for local sports than anyone in Owen Sound’s history. The committee also heralded Wallace’s efforts as a fundraiser, community builder and mentor
