December Events Report

5th Annual "Harvey Brush  Memorial"
     2024 Shuffleboard Tournament

Our 5th Annual Harvey Brush Memorial Shuffleboard Tournament was held at the Sauble Beach Community Centre on Monday, December 2nd. We had a very enthusiastic group of both experienced and novice shuffleboard players participate in this event including 14 Men's Club members and 6 Sandpipers with great fun had by all throughout the tournament.

Prior to the start of play, Cecil Groves provided a brief history of some of Harvey Brush's accomplishments. Harvey was one of the founding members of the McLaren Pipe and Drum Band in Wiarton and was fixture as a piper at the Hepworth Cenotaph Remembrance Day Ceremonies. Harvey was a WW II veteran who at 15 joined the Lorne Scots Regiment in Brampton as a reservist. He enlisted at 16 and went overseas at 17. He was part of the First Division's amphibious landing on the island of Sicily's Pachino Beach on July 3, 1943.

The games began at 9:00 a.m. sharp with a round robin tournament where each team played 4 games to compete for prizes and bragging rights.

1st Place
Alf Roth & Jerry Ayres
2nd Place
Cecil Groves & Kurt Joch
3rd Place
Bob Bowman & Don Zimmer

The winner of this year’s tournament was the team of Jerry Ayres and Alf Roth who went undefeated with 4 wins on the day scoring a total of 333 points. Second place went to the team of Cecil Groves and Kurt Joch and third place went to Bob Bowman and Don Zimmer.

Our thanks go out once again to Cecil and Joan Groves for their remarkable organizing skills. Prizes were provided by local merchants including Fretz’s Valumart, The Dunes Restaurant and Bar and Pizza Delight thanks to the extra efforts put forth by Cecil and Joan to make this a truly fun event for all.

At our half time break lots of good conversation along with coffee, muffins and donuts were enjoyed by all in attendance.
Special thanks go to Shirley Hales, Sandpiper President for offering the Sauble Beach Community Centre morning time slot to the Men's Club so that we could maintain this event within our list of activities.

Salvation Army Kettle Campaign - 2024 Results

A message from Dave, our Kettle Campaign Leader

Congratulations!

Once again, the members of the Men’s club pulled together to run a very successful Kettle Campaign. Despite bad weather and me working off two computers and from two residences, the volunteers overcame these difficult circumstances. I believe that the $8246 donated by the residents and visitors to Sauble Beach is one of the highest since our Men’s Club took on this most important project.

I would like to thank all the volunteers for taking care of all the scheduling changes and making it a seamless campaign.

I would especially like to thank Barry Gauthier for having my back through all of this.

Dave Corbett

Kettle Coordinator

On behalf of the Men’s Club executive and all our members, we want to convey our respect and gratitude to Dave Corbett who despite his battle with illness, still took on the leadership role for this year. We also want to thank Barry Gauthier for helping Dave when things got tough.

Additionally, we had reports of several very creative ideas to engage the public in the “Christmas Spirit” of giving. We had performers entertaining at the Kettle with Don Zimmer inviting Sandy Fair to play some Christmas Tunes with a "Jazz" flare on his saxophone and Gord Walden singing and performing on his ukulele during his shift. We heard the money was literally flowing into the kettles. Thanks guys!

Also, thanks to Bill Nafziger and Dan Wilder for purchasing boxes of candy canes and giving them to passing customers.  Bill and Dan said engaging each customer in wishing them a Merry Christmas with a candy cane resulted in huge net returns at the Kettle. Well Done!

Once again, we want to thank all our volunteers for the effort put forth to make this such an amazing fundraising endeavor.

We also wish to thank Fretz's Valu-Mart for providing the location
